EDPMA's "Audit Workshop...the Sequel" on March 1st in Nashville, Tennessee, was a huge success! Dozens of attendees joined our prestigious panel of speakers including Dr. William Rogers of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Ed Gaines, Margie McLean, Dr. Bing Pao, Greg Hufstetler, Dr. Jack Turner, and Mark Owen who shared their expertise on best practices in coding and handling audits.
The workshop commenced on Leap Day with a well-attended networking reception at Margaritaville where registrants connected with old friends, made new friends, and discussed the issues facing the business of emergency medicine. The next day, Ed Gaines of Zotec Partners gave a presentation on the appeals process, audit defense strategies, and mitigating audit risk. Stacie Norris of Zotec Partners discussed the first 150 days of ICD-10 focusing on the states and Medicaid plans that have run into implementation issues. She also presented on various performance measures and payment adjustments that impact reimbursement for emergency care. Dr. William Rogers of CMS presented on Alternative Payment Models and other forms of physician reimbursement and answered the audience's questions. Margie McLean of QMACS, Inc. focused her presentation on web-based coding. Dr. Bing Pao of CEP America discussed how to develop an Alternative Payment Model for emergency medicine. Greg Hufstetler of Reimbursement Technologies, Inc. (RTI) discussed examples of bad payer behavior and best practices for addressing them. Dr. Jack Turner of TeamHealth shared updates on the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) process and strategies for success. And Mark Owen held a discussion on Hot Topics in Emergency Medicine.
